Main Objective of the Role
The Regional Project Execution Practice Lead drives execution readiness and delivery assurance across Glencore Copper’s portfolio of major and mega capital projects in Latin America. As a senior member of the Latin America Major Projects leadership team, the role owns the portfolio-level execution strategy and the framework for partnering with EPCM and contracting partners, driving delivery excellence from study through execution, commissioning and operational handover.
The position works across multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating Project Directors, Site General Managers, EPCM partners, Operational Readiness teams and functional leaders to ensure projects are set up for execution and delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved cost, schedule, quality and operational objectives.
The role serves as the regional centre of expertise in project execution, contracting and EPCM strategy, constructability, project integration, commissioning readiness, contractor performance and portfolio coordination, providing both strategic direction and hands-on execution leadership across project teams and delivery partners.
Operating Context
Glencore Copper’s Latin America Major Projects portfolio comprises a diverse range of large-scale brownfield and greenfield developments at various stages of the project lifecycle. The portfolio currently comprises El Pachón (Argentina), MARA (Argentina), Coroccohuayco (Peru) and the new copper smelter in Chile, alongside other strategic growth projects within the regional portfolio.
Operating within a complex matrix environment, the Regional Project Execution Practice Lead provides portfolio-level execution leadership, technical direction and project assurance across multiple projects concurrently. The role interfaces extensively with Project Directors, Asset Leadership Teams, Operations, Technical Services, Operational Readiness, Project Controls, Procurement and Contracting, Health, Safety and Environment functions, as well as EPCM and contracting partners and key external stakeholders.
The position requires extensive travel throughout Latin America and the ability to influence senior stakeholders, drive alignment across multiple disciplines and organisations, and support project teams in overcoming execution challenges while maintaining compliance with Glencore’s Capital Management Framework, governance requirements and project delivery standards.
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related discipline.
- Postgraduate qualification in Engineering Management, Construction Management, Project Management or Business Administration is desirable.
- PMP, AACE or equivalent professional certification is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of capital project delivery frameworks, governance and stage-gate processes.
Travel Requirement
- Extensive regional travel across Argentina, Peru and Chile (approximately 40–60% depending on project phase), including time at remote project sites.
Experience
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in the delivery of major capital projects within mining, heavy industry, infrastructure, energy or related sectors.
- Demonstrated experience leading or directing the execution of projects exceeding US$2 billion in capital value.
- Significant experience across both greenfield and brownfield developments.
- Proven experience in project execution planning, constructability, commissioning, operational readiness and project integration.
- Experience defining contracting and EPCM execution strategies and selecting, mobilising and managing EPCM and major construction partners.
- Smelter, processing plant or complex industrial facility execution experience is highly desirable, given the Chile smelter within the portfolio.
- Strong background working within Owner’s Teams and managing EPCM contractors.
- Experience operating across multiple projects within a portfolio environment.
- Experience within Latin America and understanding of regional project delivery challenges is highly desirable.
- Mining industry experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong commercial, stakeholder management and influencing capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Key Accountabilities
- Define and own the portfolio-level execution and contracting strategy, ensuring each project is appropriately set up for execution together with its EPCM and contracting partners ahead of major commitment and execution gates.
- Provide portfolio leadership and execution direction across Glencore Copper’s Latin America Major Projects portfolio, driving the successful delivery of major and mega capital projects from study through execution, commissioning and operational handover.
- Partner with Project Directors and project leadership teams in the development and implementation of project execution strategies, ensuring alignment between project objectives, execution methodologies, resources, schedules and delivery plans.
- Lead and facilitate constructability reviews to ensure engineering solutions support safe, practical, efficient and cost-effective project execution outcomes.
- Drive integration between engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, operational readiness and asset teams to ensure seamless project delivery and transition into operations.
- Oversee commissioning and operational readiness activities, ensuring projects achieve operational performance objectives and readiness milestones.
- Provide oversight and coordination across multiple projects within the portfolio, identifying synergies, common risks, resource constraints and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Establish the frameworks for selecting, mobilising and managing EPCM contractors, engineering consultants, construction contractors and key suppliers to ensure delivery objectives are achieved.
- Facilitate effective interface management between projects, operating assets, contractors and corporate functions to minimise execution risk and maximise project efficiency.
- Promote and reinforce Glencore’s health, safety, environmental and community standards across all project activities.
- Review and challenge project execution performance, including schedule, cost, productivity, forecasting and Earned Value Management (EVM) metrics, supporting corrective actions where required.
- Support value engineering, capital efficiency and optimisation initiatives to maximise project value throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide strategic advice and execution direction to Project Directors and the Latin America Portfolio Projects Director on project delivery risks, opportunities and mitigation strategies.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, lessons learned and best-practice sharing across the Latin America Major Projects portfolio.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with project teams, operational leaders, EPCM partners, contractors and other stakeholders to support successful project outcomes.
