Glencore Copper is seeking a Principal Geotechnical - Open Pit to support the growth and development of our global Copper Portfolio to be based in Santiago.
Our Team
The Mine Technical team is a central function supporting existing and future operations and projects. The team is fundamental in delivering best practice operational performance and long-term strategy at our assets, as well as enabling Glencore’s ambitious growth plans.

The Opportunity
The role will provide Geotechnical Engineering support and technical governance to Glencore Copper’s South American operations, development projects and Joint Ventures. Assuring that the Geotechnical Risk (Open Pit, Waste Dumps, Tailing Storage Facilities) are adequately managed for operations and development projects.
In this role you will:
- Provide technical leadership to Operations and Project teams in Geotechnical Engineering.
- Lead independent Geotechnical review of operations and projects.
- Provide internal review for the Geotechnical disciplines for Life of Asset (LoA) and Resource Development Planning (RDP).
- Provide support to internal/independent reviews for the compliance with Glencore’s “Tailing Storage Facility and Dam Management Standard” and “Environment Standard” related to water management.
- Provide general geotechnical operational support to existing Glencore sites on an as required basis.
- Provide annual review of the Geotechnical disciplines to grant the Ore Reserves declaration.
- Mentoring and training of Senior/Junior professionals across all assets and projects.
Your training, skills & expertise checklist:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Rock Mechanics/Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline. Postgraduate qualification will be a plus.
- 12+ years of experience in Geotechnical Engineering in Open Pit and/or Underground hard rock mining operations.
- 10+ years leading geotechnical studies as owner/consultant with hydrogeological components.
- QP certification is desirable.
- Advanced use of Geotechnical software (RocScience/Slide analytical tools or similar geotechnical packages)
- Flexibility to adapt to any situation and takes initiative to face management and technical challenges.
- Ability to travel to Glencore sites throughout the South American region.
- Advanced English language skills (written & spoken).
