About Glencore Capital Projects Group (CPG)
The Capital Projects Group (CPG) is Glencore’s dedicated organisation for developing and delivering selected major capital projects across its global Commodity Departments. Working within the Life of Asset (LOA) management process, CPG will typically begin supporting selected major projects post concept development when a project is gated to the pre-Feasibility stage (PFS entry). Collaborating deeply with the respective Commodity Department and regional team, CPG is able to shape, develop and execute, major projects from PFS onwards, into Feasibility and then Execution and handover, deploying organisation capability and project management expertise to achieve targeted outcomes safely and with predictable capital productivity.

 

Operating with agility and deep expertise, CPG will collaborate with each Commodity Department to develop fit for purpose delivery models that leverage and maximise regional capabilities and skills for each project that it either supports or is accountable for. As Glencore’s portfolio and LOA plans evolve, CPG will strive to continue enhance its impact and influence, driving safe, responsible and sustainable project delivery to the business.

 

Engineering Manager, El Pachon Project

Qualifications

•    Tertiary Qualifications – Recognised/accredited degree in Engineering or Construction Management. Specialisation in management preferred
•    15+ years in engineering management working for Owners or EPC/M companies within the industrial sector, preferably related to megaprojects in the mining industry
•    A professional engineering license/chartership is preferred and desirable
•    Fluent Spanish and English is required
•    Must be able to travel to site in San Juan, Argentina, as required


Main objective of the role

•    The key role is to assure the design process output is a high technical quality design that meets applicable requirements in a cost-effective and timely manner
•    A clear definition of the objectives of the project or task (a definitive scope)
•    A specific plan for meeting project objectives and prime contract requirements
•    Early documentation and approval of design criteria and performance requirements or objectives before initiating detailed design
•    Iterations at the appropriate design stage to allow requirements to be refined and alternate designs to be assessed to optimize the process and its results
•    Integration of pertinent interdisciplinary design information and technical knowledge
•    Identification of process logic and tasks required to be completed before proceeding to the next phase
•    Progressive validation and acceptance of the design through a feedback and performance assessment process
•    Documentation of the results of intermediate phases to establish and maintain a clear and complete understanding of the design and to serve as a basis for configuration control


Operating context

Work delegated by the Project Director to engineering management and apply best practices along the engineering procurement and construction and provide the lessons learned across the Capital Projects Group portfolio.

Experience and skills

•    Extensive engineering methodology know-how for greenfield and brownfield projects for specific major and mega projects
•    Strong understanding of engineering management considering different contract delivery models (e.g., EPC, EPCM, Owners Integrated)
•    Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory engineering, HSEC codes and standards
•    Ability to remain objective and independent in a collaborative manner to solve technical problems considering engineering, procurement, and total cost of ownership concepts
•    Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills across all levels of the organization
•    Strong leadership and relationship building skills both including internal and external stakeholders
•    Semi-autonomous, self-motivated, highly pro-active, and resilient attitude
•    Technical problem-solving, facilitation, analytical, leadership/ management and negotiation capabilities with contractors/subcontractors


Key accountabilities

  1. Provide technical oversight to all project phases and provide coaching and guidance to project team on actions, opportunities, and lessons learned to be taken
  2. Provide independent view on project technical deliverables, constructability and safety in design and construction management (incl. HSEC considerations) when supporting Project Managers during studies, and construction
  3. Following up to ensure that input found to benefit the project is incorporated into the appropriate engineering documents
  4. Implement controls over variables affecting job progress to ensure engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and ensure that other corporate programs are fully utilized
  5. Lead presentations to the Independent Peer Reviews (IPRs), and when directed, provide engineering reviews reports separately from stage gate assurance across the Capital Projects Group portfolio. In addition, provide inputs and participate into the Post Investment Review (PIR) of projects, analysing the causes of cost, schedule, and technical performance deviations to facilitate and help document lessons learned
  6. Effectively interface with other areas of the organisation, (e.g., Regional Leads, Asset GMs, Sourcing and Finance teams, Technical Services, Operational Excellence, Asset Management and Technology groups) to ensure their inputs are incorporated in project construction sequencing and optimisation methodologies, where appropriate. The accountability shall also include integration of the contractors
  7. Bring about innovation and improvement of project construction techniques, practices and build strategies to mitigate risk to projects and improve capital effectiveness
