Job description.
 

Reporting directly to the Director of Operations (Mining), the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective operational control and leadership within the Surface Mining Operations department. The incumbent will also be responsible for establishing and leading the department’s strategy for the development and production of surface mines, including dumps and stockpiles, aligned with business needs in accordance with the budget and asset life plan.
 

Its essential functions will include, among others (non-exhaustive list):

•    Possess a comprehensive understanding of tailings design, construction, operations including treatment, storage and environmental management.
•    Accept responsibility for the performance of the surface mining operations department and ensure the overall quality of task execution.
•    Cultivate positive relationships within the department and across business lines through effective communication and constructive feedback to direct reports/peers.
•    Lead, coach, mentor and support employees and direct reports to understand and meet plans and commitments.
•    Instill a pragmatic, high-performance culture, drive national advancement through succession planning and work opportunities.
•    Provide leadership in identifying and managing risks through adherence to risk management processes and practices.
•    Ensure zero harm to staff, contractors, the environment and surrounding communities.
•    Proactively manage high-risk tasks, fatal risks, critical controls and business risks according to business expectations.
•    Instill high standards of workplace maintenance and a culture of well-maintained, safe and healthy facilities, workplaces and equipment.

•    Ensure effective communication between work areas, clarity of expectations and ongoing review of performance measures to consistently and safely achieve the business objective of safe and efficient delivery of ore to meet and maintain current and future concentrator needs.
•    Define the maximum potential of assets, implement strategies to realize this potential
•    Manage performance of KCC teams and subcontractors to meet productivity, quality and cost expectations within budget, schedule and plan.
•    Establish strategies and plans to mitigate risks posed by vehicle-person interactions, drilling and blasting activities, geotechnical conditions, surface and groundwater, landfills, machinery and transportation operations.
•    Implement and maintain effective management controls to mitigate wet and dry season risks to mining and landfill operations, including geotechnical conditions, loading-hauling-discharging conditions, dust, surface water, sediment and runoff management and remediation.
•    Drive operational and technical excellence by focusing on generating value through efficiency, cost control and margin improvement

Job requirements.


Qualifications and experience.

•    Engineering degree in mining engineering or related field; A graduate degree is an advantage.
•    Extensive experience (at least 15 years) in the mining industry and specifically in open-pit mining operations
•    Have at least 5 to 10 years in an operational management position/role.
•    saprolite (oxide) mining and in high rainfall environments is an advantage.
•    Previous international experience is an asset.
•    English language proficiency is required .
