Job Description

 

 

The Technical Support – Production Mining is responsible for providing technical support, training, and field supervision to underground production teams. The role aims to improve safety, production efficiency, drilling and blasting quality, ground support compliance, and overall operational performance.

 

The incumbent supports production mining activities, including long-hole drilling, blasting, cable bolting, and related processes, while promoting QA/QC standards and a strong culture of continuous improvement.

 

 

He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):

 

 

  • Train, coach, and support underground production teams in mining activities (long-hole drilling, blasting, cable bolting), ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and production standards.
  • Provide field-based technical support to operators, ensuring proper execution of activities and continuous transfer of skills (theoretical and practical).
  • Support and supervise drilling, charging, and blasting operations underground, in line with mine plans, blasting standards, and geotechnical requirements.
  • Accurately interpret and apply mine plans, drilling layouts, blast designs, and production schedules, adapting execution to ground conditions and operational constraints.
  • Contribute to the optimization of drilling patterns, blast designs, and fragmentation, including post-blast analysis to reduce overbreak, dilution, and rework.
  • Assist production teams with shift organization and daily planning, ensuring productivity, safety, and quality targets are achieved.
  • Train and support operators in ground support activities (cable bolting), ensuring compliance with ground control plans and geotechnical standards.
  • Assess operator competencies and contribute to development and training plans to enhance skills and operational autonomy.
  • Ensure strict compliance with explosives safety requirements (handling, charging, and blasting), in accordance with legal and site-specific procedures.
  • Work closely with mining engineering, geology, geotechnical, and production teams to drive continuous improvement based on operational data and field observations.
  • Conduct basic inspections and first-line checks on production equipment (e.g., long-hole drills such as Sandvik Solo) and liaise with maintenance teams to prevent recurring breakdowns.
  • Promote and apply QA/QC standards across production mining activities to improve consistency, safety, and performance.

 

Job Requirements 

 

Qualifications and Experience 

 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in underground mining operations.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in production mining, including long-hole drilling and blasting.
  • Proven experience in blasting operations (upward and downward).
  • Experience in training, coaching, or supervising underground production personnel.
  • Blasting license (mandatory).
  • Trainer or supervisor certification (preferred).
  • First aid certification (preferred).
  • FIFO / expatriate experience (an asset).
  • Fluency in French or Swahili (strongly preferred).

 

Competencies

 

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid knowledge of production mining practices, including long-hole drilling and blasting.
  • Ability to read and interpret mine plans, drilling layouts, blast designs, and geological documents.
  • Good understanding of HSE standards, safe work procedures, and ground control plans.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical knowledge of production drilling equipment.
  • Experience with QA/QC systems and continuous improvement practices.
  • Ability to support and coordinate production equipment and blasting activities.
