Job Description

 

 

The Drill & Blast Supervisor plays a critical operational leadership role in managing drilling and blasting activities within the open pit operation. The role requires hands-on experience in drilling operations, blasting supervision, or rock drilling tools (RDT) management, preferably with combined exposure across these areas.

 

The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant execution of drilling and blasting activities, aligning daily operations with the short-term mine plan, and driving continuous improvement in performance, cost control, and consumables management.

 

The incumbent must demonstrate strong leadership through effective communication, daily coordination meetings, dispatching operators, supervising pattern preparation, supervising blasting activity and aligning operational execution with approved designs.

 


He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):

 

 

  • Safety & Operational Leadership

 

    • Lead daily safety briefings and promote strict adherence to site safety standards.
    • Conduct pre-shift meetings and ensure safe drill and blast area conditions.
    • Enforce safe handling and operational discipline in explosives and drilling activities.
    • Demonstrate visible leadership in the field and during meetings.

 

             

 

    • Drilling/Blasting/RDT Operations Supervision:

 

    • Supervise drill crews to ensure compliance with approved drilling designs.
    • Ensure drilling follows the approved mining sequence.
    • Monitor drill accuracy (depth, deviation, collar position).
    • Align with maintenance on the rig’s breakdown and scheduled PMs.
    • Reconciale data with dispatch end of the shift to ensure data integrity.
    • Ensure drill pattern preparation is completed in accordance with operational standards.
    • Align drilling execution with the 24-hour and weekly plan.
    • Supervise charging, tie-in, and blast preparation activities.
    • Ensure compliance with blast design parameters (stemming, density, powder factor).
    • Coordinate blast clearance and operational readiness.
    • Support QA/QC verification prior to firing. • Supervise RDT usage across the drill fleet.
    • Monitor physical stock levels and ensure availability of critical consumables.
    • Track drill rods, bits, and hammers to optimize service life.
    • Develop and implement strategies to: o Increase RDT lifespan.
    • Reduce cost per meter drilled. o Minimize operational standby due to consumable shortages.

 

 

    • Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

 

      • Lead and participate in daily alignment meetings.
      • Dispatch operators and align crews on the daily execution plan.
      • Coordinate with:
          • Mine Planning
          • Mine operation
          • Survey
          • Geotechnical
      • Explosives supplier
      • Ensure clear communication between field operations and technical teams.

 

 

    • Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement
        • Monitor KPIs such as:
            • Metres drilled o Use of availability of the equipment
            • Penetration rate mph
            • Hole compliance
            • Drill to depth compliance
            • Explosives usage vs plan
            • Stemming compliance
        • Identify performance gaps and implement corrective actions.
        • Contribute to cost optimization initiatives in drilling and blasting

 

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and experience

 

    • Minimum 5 years of experience in:
    • Drilling supervision, or
    • Blasting supervision, or
    • Rock drilling tools management in an open pit operation.
    • Proven experience as a supervisor in an open pit mining environment.
    • Demonstrated leadership in coordinating teams and leading operational meetings.
    • Experience managing drill fleet consumables and stock tracking is highly desirable

 

Competencies

 

    • Strong practical knowledge of:
        • Drilling operations, or
        • Blasting techniques and supervision, or
        • Rock drilling tools management (preferably combined experience).
    • Solid understanding of open pit mining operations.
    • Ability to lead teams through structured communication and operational discipline.
    • Strong field presence and problem-solving capability.
    • Cost awareness and continuous improvement mindset.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Familiarity with QAQC systems for drilling and blasting.
    • Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.
    • Self-motivated and dynamic
