Job Description
Reporting to the Manager - Underground Mine Technical Services the Superintendent - Underground Mine Engineering is accountable for the safe, efficient and cost-effective delivery of Mine Engineering solutions, data analysis and minor projects to manage risk and enable excellence in underground mine production and development.
The Superintendent - Underground Mining Engineering provides leadership and operational direction to engineering and technical specialists focused on ventilation, drill & blast and backfill, ensuring resources, capacity and capability are aligned to the work plans. Accountable for identifying and coordinating engineering studies to enable continuous improvement in mine engineering, ventilation, backfill, water management, drill and blast and operational technology deployment. The role is responsible for production analysis to identify and recommend corrections for variance to plan / process and for driving continuous improvement focused on safe production, value realization and cost reduction.
Responsible for performance reporting and documentation; identifies, reports on and recommends corrections of variance to plan / process; drives and monitors continuous improvement focused on safety, operability, reliability, value and cost reduction. Delivers knowledge and skills transfer through focus on developing the competencies of subordinates.
He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

- Ensures timely and accurate reporting, including month-end processes.
- Maximizes project efficiencies to reduce waste and unnecessary costs.
- Oversees contractors, ensuring compliance with procurement and invoicing policies.

Planning & Scheduling
- Supports execution of the Underground Mine budget, schedules, and plans.
- Ensures effective planning and scheduling to meet production targets.
- Verifies inclusion of backfill, dewatering, and ventilation in mine designs.
- Reconciles drill & blast performance against plans.
- Collaborates with Mine Planning for risk-aware, data-driven improvement of mine design and resource use.
- Analyzes dispatch data to identify productivity opportunities and recommends actions.
- Implements Short Interval Control (SIC) to enhance schedule performance.
- Aligns improvement projects with business priorities and ensures proper execution.
Operational & Technical Excellence.
- Leads the Underground Mine Engineering team, ensuring necessary skills, systems, and resources are in place and maintained.
- Builds strong relationships with surface mining leadership and collaborates to meet operational commitments.
- Promotes a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
- Drives Short Interval Control using data analysis to improve efficiency, productivity, and cost.
- Ensures critical infrastructure (ventilation, backfill, fire control) is designed and executed on schedule.
- Oversees engineering and execution of OT, ventilation, backfill, and dewatering projects.
- Conducts quality control on owner and contractor work, managing corrective actions.
- Manages drill and blast designs, performance analysis, and continuous improvement.
- Owns groundwater and inrush management to protect mining operations.
- Scopes and executes minor capital projects within underground mining.
- Collaborates with Mining Projects to ensure delivery to design, cost, and specs.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and experience
- Mine Engineering degree.
- Proven ability to mentor and develop mining engineering teams.
- Technical excellence in one or more of ventilation, water and / or drill & blast engineering
- Minimum 10 years of mine engineering experience with international exposure in hard rock metalliferous mining
- Strong critical, analytical and creative thinking skills
- Ability to translate technical ideas into practical solutions
- A robust understanding of best practice in safe Underground Mine Production Engineering
- French or Swahili language skills are advantageous
- Previous overseas experience.
