Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

Under the direct supervision of the Manager – Technical Services of the Underground Mine, the candidate will be responsible for the design, planning and implementation of mining solutions that are both safe and efficient. He/she will lead a team of specialists to develop short-, medium- and long-term plans. His role includes analyzing production data, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and supervising technical studies to optimize extraction sequences. The incumbent will ensure that geotechnical, hydrological, geological and ventilation considerations are integrated into all designs.

 

He/She will have, among others, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Ensure safety, health, and environmental compliance. This includes promoting a safe and healthy work environment by modeling and applying standard work procedures. The incumbent will be expected to identify and manage risks and hazards in the workplace, conduct regular safety audits and investigate incidents to implement corrective actions, while ensuring strict compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Manage budgets and costs. This includes generating mine plans and schedules that feed into budget forecasts and long-term plans. He/she will be responsible for actively managing budgets, analyzing expenses to correct variances, and continuously looking for cost reduction opportunities. He will also have to meet financial reporting deadlines and manage contracts with suppliers.
  • Lead and develop teams. This includes creating a conducive learning environment, acting as a coach and mentor to inspire subordinates, and setting clear expectations. The role involves ensuring that team members are trained and competent for their roles, empowering others to take responsibility, and facilitating change management within the team.
  • Optimize mine planning and scheduling. This includes optimizing designs and extraction sequences to ensure that plans are realistic and do not present geotechnical or hydrological hazards. The incumbent will be expected to anticipate data gaps and coordinate data acquisition with the Geology, Hydrology and Engineering departments to refine mine plans and ensure efficient allocation of resources and equipment.
  • Collaborate with other departments. This includes building strong relationships with technical services, operations, and maintenance to ensure a consistent, data-driven approach to continuous improvement. The role involves collaborating with mining management to identify and implement productivity optimization initiatives, as well as actively engaging with the projects department to ensure the smooth delivery of capital projects.
  • Analyze the performance of the mine. This includes analyzing production data to identify opportunities for continuous improvement in mine design and schedules. He/she will implement short-interval control processes to ensure performance according to the planned schedule and provide informed recommendations to management for corrective actions and improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in mining engineering studies. This includes initiating and participating in engineering and planning studies to realize opportunities and solve operational challenges. The role is critical for the development of mine plans for new mining fronts, ensuring that all technical and safety considerations are taken into account early in the process.
  • Manage technical and operational excellence. This includes guiding the planning team to achieve the company's goals. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that the necessary skills, systems and resources are in place and well maintained. He/she will also be responsible for verifying the execution of the company's and subcontractors' activities to ensure that they comply with designs and quality standards, while proposing corrective actions.
  • Incorporate technical considerations into designs. This includes ensuring that geological, geotechnical, hydrological, ventilation and backfilling aspects are fully integrated into mine designs. He/she will be responsible for ensuring that critical infrastructure for ventilation, backfilling, dewatering and fire control is planned and executed according to established standards.
  • Ensure the quality of data and reports. This includes verifying and validating that mining activities are carried out according to the planned plans and schedules, respecting the required quality. He/she will also be responsible for producing regular performance reports, identifying deviations from the plan, and recommending necessary corrections to maintain optimal productivity.

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Hold a university degree in Mining, Mining Geology or a similar field.
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of experience in mine planning, surveying, geology or engineering.
  • International experience in hard rock mining.
  • Advanced skills in Deswik software.
  • Proven ability to coach and develop mine planning teams.
  • Technical excellence in mine planning.

Technical skills.

 

  • Strong critical, analytical, and creative analysis skills.
  • Ability to turn technical ideas into practical solutions.
  • A thorough understanding of best practices in underground mine production engineering.
  • Knowledge of French or Swahili is an asset.
