Job Description
The Superintendent – Production Engineering is responsible for leading the technical and engineering aspects of production execution within surface mining operations. This role ensures that production plans are effectively implemented and continuously improved, while promoting operational excellence, team development, and a strong safety culture. The Superintendent drives consistent performance through proactive leadership, systems thinking, and by bridging the gap between engineering and operations.
He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):
- Champion a safety-first culture; ensure compliance with safety standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Oversee the implementation of safe systems of work and risk management protocols.
- Monitor and improve work environments to eliminate hazards and support health and wellbeing.
- Lead audits, inspections, and incident investigations; ensure timely close-out of actions.
- Oversee the development and implementation of effective short- and medium-term production plans.
- Ensure alignment between mine planning, operational execution, and production targets.
- Provide engineering input into shift planning, equipment utilization, and operational scheduling.
- Analyze variances to plan and recommend actionable improvements to enhance productivity.
- Support the execution of production activities in line with operational KPIs and cost targets.
- Apply engineering knowledge to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance reliability.
- Promote the use of data-driven decision-making (e.g., dispatch systems, production reporting).
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, performance, and cost optimization.
- Lead and develop a team of engineers and supervisors; ensure clarity of roles and deliverables.
- Mentor and coach team members to build technical and leadership capacity.
- Identify and address skills gaps through coaching, training, and on-the-job learning.
- Foster a collaborative team culture focused on accountability, inclusion, and results.
- Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and cost control processes.
- Monitor costs within area of accountability and identify opportunities for savings.
- Ensure compliance with internal governance, company policies, and external regulations.
- Promote ethical behavior and integrity in all interactions.
- Following up on contractors KPIs as per KCC company policies
- Centralize KPIs reports and ensure physical KCC leadership presence on contractor’s toolbox meetings
- Developing and integrating contractual KPIs and conduct periodic contractor performances meetings to address counter performances / bottlenecks and solutions
- Maintaining contractor tracker sheet and advise on contract relevance /renewal deadlines
- Conducting contractor field adjustment implementation when it comes to practical considerations
- Provide advised support and guidance to the mining projects team
Job Requirements
Qualifications and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in open-pit mining operations, including at least 5 years in a senior engineering or supervisory role.
- Proven experience in executing production plans in high rainfall or challenging environments.
- Strong understanding of mining regulations, safety standards, and industry best practices.
Technical & Leadership Competencies
- Strong leadership and team development skills.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency with mine planning and dispatch systems (e.g., Surpac, MineSight, Modular).
- Ability to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence.
