Job Description

 

Under the direct supervision of the Manager: Maintenance WOL - Roaster & Cobalt, the incumbent is responsible for the management and control of comprehensive maintenance and repair processes pertaining to the Roaster section and associated systems with the aim of improving plant performance in terms of safety, effective operational cost control, equipment availability/reliability, and risk mitigation. The role focuses on high-temperature equipment, gas handling systems, and refractory-lined assets, ensuring safe and efficient operations through robust maintenance execution and shutdown management

 

He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Develop and implement maintenance strategies, systems, and standards to reduce risk, variability, and optimize roaster plant performance.
  • Oversee mechanical maintenance strategy and execution across the roaster section, including:
  • Roasters and burners
  • Gas ducts and air systems
  • Fans and blowers
  • Feed and discharge systems
  • Manage all Maintenance and Inspection activities in a safe and cost-efficient manner, ensuring compliance with company and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare business cases for contracts, shutdowns, and improvement initiatives; provide technical recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Create a high-performance working environment that drives safety, productivity, and cost control while maintaining plant availability targets.
  • Manage shutdowns and campaign maintenance programs specific to roaster operations, including:
  • Refractory repairs and replacements
  • Ducting and structural repairs
  • Major equipment overhauls
  • Manage all fault finding and diagnostic activities, ensuring rapid and effective resolution of breakdowns.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical failures, thermal stresses, and operational risks inherent to high-temperature processes.
  • Oversee refractory and thermal system integrity, ensuring proper installation, curing, inspection, and lifecycle management.
  • Participate in failure investigations and root cause analysis to drive defect elimination (CCC) and long-term reliability improvements.
  • Identify, communicate, and implement cost reduction and efficiency improvement initiatives.
  • Drive maintenance KPIs and ensure accurate reporting aligned with business requirements.
  • Manage fixed plant assets within the roaster section using maintenance management systems.
  • Recognize short-term and long-term risks and opportunities impacting plant performance.
  • Ensure compliance with OEM standards and best practices for pyrometallurgical equipment.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance plant reliability, uptime, and maintenance efficiency.
  • Train, coach, and develop maintenance personnel and contractors.
  • Support maintenance planning and engineering processes, ensuring quality work preparation and execution.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of incidents, performance metrics, and compliance.
  • Drive safe working practices, particularly for high-risk activities such as:
  • Hot work
  • Confined space entry
  • Work at height
  • Lifting and cranage

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (essential) or equivalent
  • Minimum 7 years of technical field experience, preferably in mining, smelting, or refinery environments
  • Minimum 5 years in mid-level leadership / supervisory roles
  • Strong experience in refinery process plants
  • Demonstrated experience in shutdown management and refractory maintenance
  • Excellent leadership, motivation, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong commitment to safety and environmental standards
  • Solid understanding of equipment reliability and maintenance strategies
  • Good knowledge of risk management and quality assurance practices
  • Working knowledge of SAP, MS Project, and maintenance tools.

 

Technical Skills

  • Strong organizational skills to manage roaster maintenance, shutdowns, and campaign work
  • Proven experience in high-temperature and process plant equipment (roasters, burners, ducts, fans, refractory systems)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to drive improvement initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, with the ability to engage diverse teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint) and maintenance systems
  • Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams under high operational pressure
  • Strong understanding of shutdown execution and reliability improvement strategies
