Job description.

 

Under the direct supervision of the Mining Health and Safety Manager, the Superintendent Health & Safety - Mining OP, MTS & Security is responsible to lead a team that creates value by enabling health and safety in KCC’ Open Pit Mining Operations by: Overseeing safety operations relating to open-cast mining operations and Developing, implementing and monitoring safety compliance with Health and safety standards particularly in context of open-cast mining operations.

This position is responsible for the direct supervision of approximately 20 national employees. Additionally, this position requires feedback and evaluation of all employees to create a cost effective and high-performance team atmosphere

He/She will have, among other things, the following essential functions (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Co-ordinate the implementation of the Incident Reporting and Investigation Standard and site SOP’s
  • Support the production and services teams in the implementation of the KCC mine safe production plan
  • Co-ordinate the implementation of the Life Saving Behaviours at the Open Pit
  • Monitor the Task Observation Process for Supervisor implementation and inspections through audits
  • Monitor performance of the safety team in area of responsibility
  • Monitor and facilitate the effective reporting of incidents and investigations. Ensure that incidents are assigned to Safety team members in the department who are responsible for follow ups of closure of the incident and closure of actions with evidence
  • Ensure each incident is tracked and progress monitored and where required issue is escalated to Mining Health and Safety Manager
  • Participate in High Potential Risk Incidents Investigations
  • Monitoring to the High-Risk Work Verification process
  • Monitor individual performance in terms of identified commitments and targets using a score card which is reviewed on a monthly basis and provide necessary response to poor performance
  • Liaise with Fatal Hazards Protocols departmental Champions on the implementation of the Fatal Hazard Protocols
  • Proactively identify the HSE issues that arise, address them and manage them in conformity with the local legislation while ensuring the company’s sustainable development
  • Educate KCC supervision on HSE policies, Procedures and Best Practices
  • Support and implement all applicable Glencore initiatives
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills

 

 

Job requirements.

 

Qualifications and experience.

 

  • Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or Engineering related discipline
  • At least seven (7) years’ experience in a middle management role in a large-scale mining site
  • Extensive experience in the implementation of the ISO 45001 or process safety management systems
  • Strong technical understanding and experience of safety and environmental matters for mentors and guides to improve local skill set
  • Previous experience in an expatriate role advantageous

 

 

Technical skills.

 

  • High level understanding of all relevant Safety and Health legislation
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spread sheet applications
  • Confident communicator with senior management, legal entities and external stakeholders
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Ability and experience to change safety culture within a large organization
  • Ambitious and passionate professional with a keen desire to make a difference to their safety culture
  • Fluent English speaking
