Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

The Technical Support Specialist – Long Hole Drilling and Blasting will  be responsible for training, supervising and supporting operators in long-hole drilling, blasting and cable bolting in an underground mining environment. He or she will contribute to improving safety, drilling quality, blast fragmentation and compliance with geotechnical standards. This role also involves the implementation of quality control standards (QA/QC) and the establishment of a culture of continuous improvement.

 

He/She will have, among others, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Train and supervise teams in long-hole drilling, blasting and cable bolting. This includes the transfer of practical and theoretical skills, the support of operators in the field, and the continuous evaluation of their progress according to the company's safety and efficiency standards.
  • Supervise drilling, loading and blasting operations in underground workings. This includes planning and coordinating activities, managing priorities, communicating between the different departments (geology, engineering, topography) and ensuring that all tasks are carried out according to the procedures in place.
  • Accurately read and follow mine plans and drilling instructions. This includes the correct interpretation of the lines, profiles, angles and gradients to be drilled, as well as the adaptation of the work according to geotechnical constraints and firing plans.
  • Optimize drill patterns and blasting practices for efficient fragmentation. This includes analyzing the results after blasting, reducing overbreaking, adjusting hole spacings, and selecting the right types of explosive loading.
  • Supervise operators in the organization of their shifts. This includes scheduling daily tasks, tracking weekly goals, maintaining high standards of productivity and quality, and proactively resolving operational issues.
  • Train cable nutrunner operators in safe and efficient use. This includes teaching best practices for stabilizing excavations, adhering to retaining plans, and applying current geotechnical standards.
  • Assess the skills of team members and establish individual development plans. This includes conducting formal assessments, setting clear and measurable goals, and implementing targeted training to build skills and autonomy.
  • Ensure the safety of blasting operations, from handling to firing. This includes overseeing loading practices, strict compliance with explosives regulations, and ongoing training on safety and emergency procedures.
  • Collaborate with technical teams for continuous performance improvement. This includes participating in technical meetings, contributing to the analysis of incidents or anomalies, and implementing sustainable solutions based on field data.
  • Provide basic checks and maintenance of long-hole drills (Solo, Sandvik, etc.). This includes daily inspections, detection of minor breakdowns, communication with the maintenance team, and training of operators in preventive maintenance.

 

Job Requirements 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Minimum 12 years of experience in the underground mining industry.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in long-hole drilling (especially with Sandvik Solo drills).
  • Proven experience in blasting including uphill and downhill drilling.
  • Experience in supervising or training technical staff.
  • Valid driver's license (country of origin).
  • Trainer or supervisor certification (preferred).
  • First aid certificate (preferred).
  • Blasting license required.
  • Previous experience in expatriation FIFO (an asset).
  • Fluency in French or Swahili (strongly desired).

Technical skills.

 

  • Proficiency in long-hole drilling operations (Solo, Sandvik, etc.).
  • Knowledge of blasting and safe loading techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret topographical, geological and drilling plans.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanics and electricity of long-hole drills.
  • Good understanding of HSE standards, safe work procedures and retaining plans.
  • Experience with QA/QC and continuous improvement systems.
  • Ability to effectively manage loading and blasting equipment.
