Under the supervision of the Superintendent: TSF Compliance, the role of the incumbent will be to design, deploy and manage instrumentation systems for monitoring the performance and stability of tailings storage facilities (TSF). He/she will ensure the collection, management and analysis of data to support decision-making, risk management and regulatory compliance. The position also involves interpreting data to detect anomalies and anticipate risks. He/she will contribute to the continuous improvement of the monitoring systems. Finally, he/she will provide technical support to multidisciplinary teams and ensure compliance with HSE standards.

 

He/She will have, among others, the following essential functions (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Design TSF instrumentation systems. This includes defining instrumentation needs, selecting appropriate equipment (piezometers, inclinometers, topographic prisms, etc.), and developing technical specifications in accordance with industry standards and project requirements.
  • Supervise the installation and commissioning of instruments. This includes coordinating installation activities in the field, verifying the calibration of equipment, as well as validating its proper functioning before it is put into operation.
  • Develop and implement monitoring programs. This includes developing monitoring plans, defining data collection frequencies, and integrating manual and automated systems to ensure effective monitoring of FSTs.
  • Ensure the management of instrumentation data. This includes the administration of databases, the structuring of monitoring platforms, as well as ensuring the integrity, traceability and availability of the data collected.
  • Analyze and interpret surveillance data. This includes leveraging data to assess the stability and performance of FSTs, identifying trends and anomalies, and detecting potential risks early.
  • Define and manage alert thresholds and action plans (TARP). This includes establishing threshold values, setting up response plans in the event of exceedances, as well as following up on necessary corrective actions.
  • Produce technical and regulatory reports. This includes the preparation of detailed periodic reports to internal stakeholders and authorities, ensuring the clarity, accuracy and compliance of the information provided.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and requirements. This includes complying with local regulations, international standards (such as GISTM) and internal policies, as well as preparing for audits and inspections.
  • Provide technical support and contribute to continuous improvement. This includes supporting operational and engineering teams, participating in TSF design reviews, as well as recommending improvements to monitoring systems and practices.
  • Manage service providers and coordinate stakeholders. This includes supervising contractors, reviewing their technical deliverables, as well as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams (geotechnical, hydrogeology, operations).

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and experience.

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in TSF monitoring, geotechnical instrumentation or dam safety
  • Proven experience in the implementation of instrumentation systems and monitoring technologies
  • Good knowledge of the standards and regulations applicable to TSF (e.g. GISTM desired)
  • Experience in the mining sector or major infrastructure projects is highly desirable

 

Technical skills

 

  • Master geotechnical instrumentation systems (piezometers, inclinometers, etc.)
  • Master monitoring data management and analysis tools
  • Apply the principles of stability analysis of geotechnical structures
  • Develop and interpret performance and risk indicators
  • Use specialized software in instrumentation and data management
  • Understand international standards related to TSFs (e.g. GISTM)
  • Implement monitoring plans and TARPs
