Job Description

 

 

The Senior Supervisor – Maintenance (Electrical & Instrumentation) is responsible for leading and supervising all underground electrical and instrumentation maintenance activities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mining equipment and infrastructure.

The role focuses on maintaining high availability of underground electrical systems, compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, and development of a competent maintenance team.

 


He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):

 

  • Safety & Compliance
  • Promote and demonstrate strong safety leadership and ensure full compliance with HSEC policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure all electrical and instrumentation work is carried out safely, following lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and permit-to-work systems.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations related to E&I activities.

 

  • Maintenance & Operations
  • Supervise underground electrical and instrumentation maintenance for fixed and mobile equipment, including substations, switchgear, drives, pumps, ventilation systems, communications, and monitoring systems.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Ensure rapid and effective response to electrical breakdowns to minimize production downtime.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify recurring faults or reliability issues.

 

  • Planning & Coordination
  • Work closely with underground operations, engineering, and planning teams to align maintenance activities with production schedules.
  • Support maintenance planning by providing accurate job scopes, resource requirements, and feedback on work execution.
  • Manage materials, tools, and spares required for underground E&I maintenance.

 

  • People Leadership & Development
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor electricians, instrumentation technicians, and contractors underground.
  • Ensure team competence through coaching, training, and compliance with certification and competency requirements.
  • Conduct performance management, toolbox talks, and shift handovers.

 

  • Continuous Improvement & Reporting
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance practices, equipment reliability, and energy efficiency.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and reliability-focused maintenance strategies.
  • Prepare maintenance reports, breakdown analysis, and performance metrics for management review.

 

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and experience

 

  • University qualification or diploma in Electrical Engineering / Instrumentation (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in electrical and instrumentation maintenance, preferably in underground mining.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
  • Strong experience with underground electrical infrastructure, control systems, PLCs, and instrumentation.
  • Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and electrical standards.
  • Strong safety leadership and risk awareness.
  • Proven supervisory and team leadership skills.
  • Good planning, coordination, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a production-driven environment.
  • Effective communication and reporting skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.
