Job Description
This role is responsible for developing and implementing long-term mine plans for underground operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable mining practices. A key objective of this role is to train and mentor Junior Engineers toward Planning/Design Engineer positions.
He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):
- Develop and optimize long-term underground mine plans, including stope designs, level layouts, and mining schedules, taking into account geological, geotechnical, logistical, and ventilation constraints.
- Prepare and maintain long-term schedules (3–10 years) to meet company objectives and align production with the strategic mine plan.
- Integrate capital projects and major mine infrastructure into the long-term mine plan to ensure timely execution in support of planned production.
- Develop and maintain cost models, analyze operational and geological data, and identify opportunities to improve long-term planning, reduce costs, and increase productivity.
- Identify, assess, and escalate risks that could impact the life-of-mine schedule to ensure operational and financial sustainability.
- Collaborate with geologists, surveyors, geotechnical engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure data integration, knowledge sharing, and alignment with corporate strategy.
- Provide technical expertise, guidance, and mentorship to Junior Engineers to support their professional development.
- Ensure all mine plans comply with Glencore’s Fatal Hazard Protocols and applicable legislation.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering.
- Over 7 years of experience in underground mine planning, with strong expertise in long-term design, scheduling, and optimization.
- Advanced proficiency in mine planning software such as Deswik CAD and Deswik Sched.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven experience in developing and mentoring Junior Engineers.
- Experience in ore reserve estimation and JORC Code reporting in massive orebodies is a strong advantage.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Act as a role model for Junior Engineers as a safety leader.
- Ensure strict adherence to planning deadlines.
- Organize and manage multiple long-term priorities effectively.
