Under the direct supervision of the Lead - Underground Expansion Execution, the role of the incumbent will be to plan, coordinate and steer the entire underground mine expansion program to ensure the safe, efficient and sustainable completion of the development work. He/She will ensure the implementation of underground infrastructure, compliance with technical objectives, deadlines and budget, while ensuring compliance with Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) standards. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams, EPCM partners, contracting companies and the various operational functions, he/she will ensure the preparation of operations for a successful transition to underground production and contribute to the achievement of the company's strategic growth objectives.

 

He/She will have, among others, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Lead the execution of the underground expansion program. This includes the day-to-day planning, coordination and monitoring of underground development activities, the completion of access structures, mining infrastructure and development works in accordance with approved technical objectives, while ensuring compliance with deadlines, costs, quality requirements and safety standards.
  • Coordinate the multidisciplinary activities of the project. This includes coordinating the engineering, geology, mine planning, ventilation, geotechnical, hydrogeology, mining operations teams, as well as EPCM partners and contracting companies to ensure smooth execution and effective integration across disciplines.
  • Oversee the management of contracting companies. This includes monitoring the performance of contracting companies, assessing their productivity, controlling costs, meeting KPIs, contractual obligations and security requirements, while facilitating their mobilization, integration and resolution of operational difficulties.
  • Develop and monitor project execution plans. This includes transforming approved studies into detailed execution plans, developing implementation schedules, identifying critical activities, coordinating construction sequences as well as monitoring risks that may affect the schedule, costs or quality of deliverables.
  • To ensure the application of Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) standards. This includes promoting exemplary safety leadership, rigorously enforcing the company's HSEC standards, managing critical risks related to underground work, conducting field inspections, facilitating safety exchanges, and developing a proactive culture with employees and contractor partners.
  • Provide technical leadership for underground work. This includes technical guidance for underground mine development activities, declines, supports, infrastructure, ventilation, drainage, geotechnical controls and mining services, as well as solving complex technical issues and optimizing engineering solutions.
  • Ensure budget management and cost control. This includes monitoring budget execution, controlling expenditure, developing financial forecasts, analyzing variances, identifying cost optimization opportunities as well as managing claims and contract variations to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Prepare for go-live and transition to operations. This includes developing operational readiness plans, coordinating the commissioning of underground infrastructure, validating the systems required for production, and arranging for the handover of facilities to operations teams in safe and operational conditions.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with stakeholders. This includes working closely with the Mining Operations, Technical Services, Capital Projects, Supply Chain, Finance, HSEC and Community Relations teams, while ensuring regular reporting to project management and decision-making bodies.
  • Lead, develop and support teams. This includes leading multidisciplinary teams, developing the technical skills of engineers and supervisors, promoting a culture of performance, accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement, while fostering an inclusive, respectful and operational excellence-oriented work environment

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • University degree (Bachelor's/Bachelor's degree) or Higher National Diploma in Mining Engineering or an equivalent discipline.
  • A certification in Project Management (PMP, PRINCE2 or equivalent) is an asset.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in underground hard rock mining.
  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience in management or leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in the execution of major underground mine expansion projects.
  • Strong experience in underground mine development, declines, high-speed development, Greenfield and Brownfield projects, Board & Pillar and Long Hole Stopping methods.
  • Proven experience in the management of mining contracting companies.
  • Experience transitioning between construction and operation.
  • Experience in mining operations in Africa is a strong asset.

 

Technical skills.

 

  • Strong knowledge of the management and execution of underground mining expansion projects.
  • Excellent knowledge of underground mine development methods and associated infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in project planning, schedule control and cost management.
  • Good knowledge of the principles of ventilation, geotechnics, drainage (dewatering) and underground mining services.
  • Experience in managing contracting companies, EPCM contracts and multidisciplinary interfaces.
  • Mastery of HSEC standards, risk management and operational readiness processes.
  • Good command of project management tools and the Microsoft Office suite (Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
