Main objectives of the position

 

Under the direct supervision of the Hydrogeology Superintendent, the Senior Hydrogeologist is responsible for leading hydrogeological investigations, groundwater management programs, and dewatering operations to support safe and sustainable open pit mining activities.

 

The incumbent provides technical leadership in groundwater assessment, hydrogeological modelling, pit dewatering, and geotechnical risk management while ensuring compliance with Glencore standards, MUMI SAFEWORK V2 requirements, and applicable environmental regulations.

 

Minimum qualification

 

  • Bachelor's Honours Degree in Hydrogeology, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A Master's Degree in Hydrogeology, Engineering, or a related field is an added advantage.
  • Professional registration as a Scientist or Engineer is highly desirable.

 

Required Experience

 

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in hydrogeology within the mining or heavy industrial sector.
  • Minimum of 2 years' supervisory experience leading technical teams.
  • Extensive experience in open pit mining operations and groundwater management.
  • Experience in groundwater investigations, drilling programs, hydrogeological testing, and dewatering systems.
  • Proven experience in hydrogeological risk assessment, groundwater monitoring, and mine water management.
  • Experience managing contractors and multidisciplinary technical projects.

 

Required skills

 

  • Strong technical knowledge of hydrogeology, groundwater modelling, and mine dewatering systems.
  • Experience in groundwater monitoring, hydrogeological databases, and data interpretation.
  • Ability to develop groundwater management strategies and dewatering plans aligned with Life of Mine objectives.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical risks associated with groundwater and slope stability.
  • Strong project management and contractor management skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and develop technical teams.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and commitment to safety.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and hydrogeological software applications.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead hydrogeological investigations, groundwater monitoring, and dewatering programs to support safe and efficient mining operations.
  • Conduct detailed pit wall inspections to evaluate groundwater seepage and assess the impact of groundwater and surface water on slope stability.
  • Ensure hydrogeological data is accurately collected, validated, interpreted, and maintained within the groundwater database.
  • Coordinate groundwater monitoring systems and hydrogeological instrumentation programs.
  • Develop and implement short-, medium-, and long-term hydrogeological strategies aligned with Life of Mine planning.
  • Prepare and maintain groundwater management plans, dewatering strategies, and surplus water management plans integrated with mine planning activities.
  • Review and continuously improve Groundwater Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), monitoring systems, and alarm thresholds.
  • Identify hydrogeological hazards, risks, and opportunities through data analysis and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Provide technical advice on groundwater management, borehole water supply, pumping systems, and mine water infrastructure.
  • Ensure groundwater quality and discharge comply with statutory environmental requirements in collaboration with Environmental and Sustainability teams.
  • Supervise drilling programs, hydrogeological investigations, exploration activities, and contractor performance.
  • Prepare monthly hydrogeological performance reports and maintain accurate technical documentation.
  • Provide technical expertise and support for mining, geotechnical, environmental, and capital project teams.
  • Develop the technical capabilities of team members through coaching, mentoring, and structured training.
  • Ensure compliance with Glencore standards, MUMI SAFEWORK V2 requirements, environmental legislation, and company procedures.
  • Comply with Glencore's environmental management requirements and procedures as well as MUMI SARL's environmental policy.
