Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

The incumbent is responsible for the overall management of the underground backfilling process, from procurement to installation. His primary role is to ensure that backfill plans meet quality control standards (QA/QC), comply with Glencore's Fill Management Plan (BMP) and safety protocols. This position requires close coordination with mining operations and the mill to optimize the production program and backfill quality.

 

He/She will have, among others, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Coordinate backfilling operations. This includes coordination between the KTC mill, backfill plant, and mining operations to meet backfill schedules and quality requirements. This is to ensure that backfill production is aligned with the needs of the mine.
  • Analyze and optimize backfill supply. This includes tracking backfill supply and analyzing downtime trends to ensure a consistent end product and consistent placement rates. Opportunities must be identified to minimize losses and waste.
  • Manage operational compliance and security. This includes governance of operational compliance with the backfill plan and adherence to the Embankment Management Plan (BMP) in terms of production, quality and safety. This is to ensure that Glencore's security protocols are strictly followed.
  • Design and implement drainage systems. This includes the design and implementation of effective drainage systems to manage water from infilling. It is also necessary to produce backfill work plans that specify the type of backfill, cross-linking routes and bulkhead design.
  • Complete backfill notes and align processes. This includes completing detailed stope filling notes and ensuring that the filling is aligned with the relevant hydraulic backfill patterns.
  • Collaborate with the underground team. This includes working closely with the underground team to optimize and communicate backfill planning priorities, taking into account both short- and long-term mine plans.
  • Evaluate the success of backfilling. This includes reviewing and evaluating the success of backfilling through appropriate periodic reconciliations. The goal is to ensure that the results are in line with expectations.
  • Assist in the establishment of standards and procedures. This includes assisting in the establishment and implementation of backfill processes, standards and procedures.
  • Provide technical advice. This includes providing advice in line with daily, weekly, and monthly backfill requirements to all technical and operational departments.
  • Participate in innovation projects. This includes active participation in backfill related projects as a Technical Expert (SME), with a particular focus on technological innovation. It is also about managing the commercial and technical reach of suppliers and consultants.

 

Job Requirements 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Chemical, Geological, Mining Engineering or a related field.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of work experience directly related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Have a good knowledge and proven experience in mine backfill operations.

Technical skills.

 

  • Backfill Expertise : Proven experience in supporting backfill operations.
  • Analysis and problem solving : Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Writing and Communication : Strong technical writing and communication skills in French and English.
  • Project Management : Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
  • Software : Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (intermediate level), Word, PowerPoint, and Project. Experience with 3D mine design software, including Deswik CAD and Scheduler, is an asset.
