Job description.
Under the direct supervision of the Projects Engineering Manager, the incombent is responsible for overseeing and managing all civil engineering activities related to capital and infrastructure projects. This includes ensuring that civil works such as earthworks, foundations, structural elements, roads, drainage systems, and other infrastructure are properly designed, executed, and delivered in alignment with project requirements, engineering standards, safety norms, and regulatory obligations.
Key objectives include delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget; ensuring high-quality outcomes; minimizing risks; and driving continuous improvement in civil engineering execution.
He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities:
- Project Management
- Develop and manage civil engineering project plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, mechanical, and construction departments.
- Ensure adherence to project timelines, safety regulations, and quality standards.
- Standards
- Develop and maintain reference standards, procedures, and processes for civil and structural engineering.
- Maintain accurate records of relevant sites, plant, and project data.
- Acquire, maintain, and ensure effective use of key design tools and field equipment.
- Civil Engineering Design & Planning
- Develop, review, and validate civil engineering designs, structural drawings, calculations, and technical specifications.
- Ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and project objectives.
- Coordinate with engineering consultants, contractors, and surveyors.
- Audit existing and new structures for compliance and recommend corrective measures where necessary.
- Procurement
- Manage the procurement of construction materials and civil works services.
- Participate in bid preparation and evaluation for civil engineering packages.
- Negotiate with suppliers and contractors to ensure timely delivery, quality, and cost control.
- Construction Oversight
- Supervise construction activities including excavation, formwork, reinforcement installation, concrete works, and road construction.
- Ensure all works meet design specifications and quality requirements through regular site inspections and audits.
- Monitor subcontractor performance and enforce compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Commissioning and Handover
- Oversee final inspections, snagging, and the handover process for completed civil works.
- Ensure completed structures meet performance, durability, and safety expectations.
- Safety and Compliance
- Enforce compliance with safety policies, environmental standards, and all applicable civil engineering codes.
- Conduct safety inspections, toolbox talks, and HSE briefings to promote a strong safety culture.
- Risk Management
- Identify and evaluate risks associated with construction and project execution.
- Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to mitigate identified risks.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience managing civil engineering projects in mining, heavy industry, or infrastructure development.
- Strong background in project execution, site supervision, and civil/structural design review.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in civil engineering and project management software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, MS Project, Primavera P6).
- Familiarity with mining and industrial site requirements is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ACI, AISC, Eurocode).
