Job Description

 

Under the direct supervision of the Manager: Projects Controls & PMO, the incumbent is tasked with orchestrating the planning, execution, and completion of projects within a copper mining operation. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that all projects are executed in alignment with the strategic objectives of the mining operation, optimizing resources, managing costs, and adhering to stringent safety and environmental regulations. This role is essential in translating high-level strategic goals into actionable project plans and ensuring their successful execution. The Superintendent: Projects Planner will work to enhance operational efficiency, mitigate risks, and drive continuous improvement in project management practices.

 

He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities:

 

  1. Project Planning and Scheduling
  • Develop Detailed Project Plans: Create comprehensive project plans that include scope, objectives, timelines, resources, and deliverables. Ensure alignment with overall strategic goals.
  • Schedule Development: Develop detailed project schedules, incorporating all critical activities and milestones. Use project management software to track progress and make adjustments as needed.

 

  1. Resource Management
  • Resource Allocation: Allocate resources efficiently, including personnel, equipment, and materials. Monitor resource usage to ensure optimal deployment and avoid bottlenecks.
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring that expenditures are tracked and controlled. Conduct regular financial reviews and adjust forecasts as necessary.

 

  1. Risk Management
  • Identify and Mitigate Risks: Conduct risk assessments to identify potential issues that could impact project success. Develop mitigation strategies and contingency plans to address identified risks.
  • Problem Solving: Address and resolve any issues or obstacles that arise during the project lifecycle, ensuring minimal impact on project timelines and objectives.

 

  1. Quality Assurance
  • Monitor Project Performance: Track project progress against established goals and standards. Implement quality control measures to ensure that project deliverables meet or exceed quality expectations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Evaluate project outcomes and processes to identify areas for improvement. Implement best practices and lessons learned to enhance future project performance.

 

  1. Stakeholder Communication
  • Regular Updates: Provide regular updates and reports to internal and external stakeholders on project status, milestones, and any issues.
  • Facilitate Meetings: Organize and lead project meetings, including kick-off meetings, progress reviews, and post-project evaluations.

 

  1. Compliance and Safety
  • Adhere to Regulations: Ensure all project activities comply with relevant regulations, including health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Promote Safety Culture: Foster a strong safety culture within project teams, ensuring that safety protocols are followed and incidents are reported and addressed promptly.

 

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Civil Engineering, Project Management, or a related field.
  • A master’s degree or relevant professional certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) is preferred.
  • Certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) is highly desirable. Additional certifications in safety or environmental management are a plus
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in project planning and management within the mining industry, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or senior planning role.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing large-scale projects, including planning, execution, monitoring, and completion.
  • Proven experience in copper mining operations, including familiarity with mining processes, equipment, and industry-specific challenges.

 

Technical Skills

  • Project Management Software: Proficiency in project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Primavera, or similar tools).
  • Budgeting and Financial Analysis: Strong skills in budgeting, financial forecasting, and cost control.
  • Technical Expertise: Understanding of mining operations, equipment, and processes specific to copper mining.
  • Risk Management: Ability to conduct risk assessments and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and a strategic mindset.
