Job description.

 

Under the direct supervision of the Planning and Scheduling Superintendent, the incumbent will be responsible for the development, maintenance, and reporting of integrated project schedules for mining capital projects, in accordance with the Glencore Capital Management Framework. This role plays a critical part in ensuring timely execution of project activities by coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, analyzing schedule data, and recommending corrective actions when variances occur. Leveraging industry-standard scheduling software, the incumbent will model complex construction and engineering activities, monitor progress, and communicate schedule performance to stakeholders. A strong focus will be placed on maintaining schedule integrity, identifying potential risks, and supporting proactive decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

He/She will have, among other things, the following essential functions (non-exhaustive):

 

Schedule Development & Maintenance:

  • Develop and maintain detailed, resource- and cost-loaded schedules using an industry-standard scheduling software such as Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
  • Build detailed Work-Breakdown Structures (WBS), logic ties, calendars, sequences and constraints, for each project phase, from Concept / Selection / Specification to execution and closeout.
  • Incorporate inputs from engineering, procurement, construction, safety and environmental teams to ensure comprehensive project integration.
  • Build a comprehensive responsibility matrix to support adequate resource allocation
  • Develop basis of schedules to support accurate estimation and key assumptions
  • Implement Project Management principles and processes for schedule baselining

 

Project Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Update schedules at regular intervals (daily/weekly/monthly) to reflect actual progress, percent complete, remaining durations and revised logic ties.
  • Conduct Earned Value Management (EVM) and critical-path analysis; flag deviations and propose corrective actions.
  • Monitor resource allocation to optimize project cost and duration.
  • Develop contingency plans for delivery risks at package level and recovery plans for potential project delays.
  • Perform schedule-driven budget forecasts in alignment with projects cost and duration.
  • Generate dashboards, S-curve plots, trend charts and reports to enhance project governance and transparency.
  • Strengthen collaboration among project stakeholders through effective communication of reporting,
  • Identify opportunities to optimize construction schedules and improve efficiency.
  • Facilitate schedule-update workshops with engineering and construction leads, procurement, contractors, suppliers and operations teams.

 

Schedule Risk & Change Management:

  • Proactively identify and address potential schedule risks, implementing mitigation strategies to minimize delays.
  • Capture scope variances and implement proper Change Management in alignment with the Capital Management Framework (CMF).
  • Evaluate impact of change requests (scope, time, cost); integrate approved changes into the baseline and perform re-forecasting.

 

Safety, Environmental Compliance & Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, technologies and best practices related to construction projects planning and scheduling.
  • Maintain efficient bookkeeping of project records such as manhours and lessons-learned reports for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all projects are planned and scheduled in compliance with KCC safety regulations and Environmental standards.

 

 

Job requirements.

 

Qualifications and experience.

  • B Tech / National Diploma / Degree in engineering or related field
  • Postgraduate certificate or diploma in Project Management is an advantage
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in planning and scheduling constructions projects, preferably within the mining industry.
  • Demonstrated track record in developing, maintaining, and reporting integrated schedules.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6).

 

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in project management software
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations relevant to mining operations.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications related to mining construction.
  • French or Swahili language skills are advantageous
