Main objectives of the position

 

Reporting to the Drill Supervisor, the Drill Rig Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a production drill rig to perform drilling activities required for blasting operations in accordance with drilling plans, technical specifications, safety procedures, and Mutanda Mining standards.

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the availability, quality, and compliance of drilled blast holes to support mining production while maintaining the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental performance.

 

Minimum qualification 

 

Professional Studies Certificate (A5, A4) or equivalent qualification

Valid national driver's license

Heavy equipment operation certification or equivalent experience is an added advantage

 

Required Experience

 

Minimum 1 to 2 years of experience in production drilling operations within a mining environment

Experience operating Epiroc D65 drill rigs or similar drilling equipment

Experience in open-pit mining operations

Good understanding of drilling parameters and blasting requirements

 

Required skills

 

Proficiency in production drilling operations

Ability to safely operate heavy mobile equipment

Good knowledge of mining safety standards and procedures

Ability to interpret and follow drilling plans

Competence in conducting pre-operational inspections of equipment

Strong teamwork and communication skills

High level of discipline, accountability, and attention to detail

Ability to work under pressure in a demanding mining environment

Ability to identify and report mechanical defects and unsafe conditions

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Perform blast hole drilling activities in accordance with approved drilling plans

Adhere to technical drilling parameters including depth, angle, diameter, and spacing requirements

Correctly position the drill rig according to field markings and operational instructions

Verify the quality and compliance of drilled holes before handover to the blasting team

Conduct pre-start and pre-operational inspections of the drill rig

Check fuel, oil, lubrication, and hydraulic system levels before operation

Immediately report equipment defects, breakdowns, or abnormal conditions

Maintain the drill rig in a clean and operational condition

Accurately complete daily reports, checklists, and operational records

Comply with all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) procedures and standards

Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Participate actively in safety meetings and toolbox talks

Ensure the drilling platform remains safe and stable throughout operations

Achieve drilling productivity targets while maintaining quality standards

Minimize equipment downtime and maximize drill rig utilization

Work closely with Geology, QA/QC, Mining, and Blasting teams to ensure drilling accuracy and compliance

Ensure effective shift handovers and communication with fellow operators

Comply with Glencore's environmental procedures and MUMI SARL's environmental policy.
