Job Description

 

Reporting to the General Manager – Underground Mining, the Manager - Underground Mine Maintenance is accountable for the Planning and Execution of Maintenance on the Underground Fixed Plant and Mobile Mining Equipment.   The role ensures that the fleet, mechanical and electrical availabilities and reliabilities required to sustain and enable operations are delivered in a safe, efficient and cost-effective way in alignment to budget commitments and in accordance to KCC and Glencore Standards and expectations.

 


He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):

 

  • Health, Safety, Environment, Community & Risk
    • Champions and role model the proactive management of High Risk Tasks, Fatal Hazard Protocols, Critical Controls, Enterprise Risks and local mining regulations.
    • Strictly complies with classified plant and life support system statutory maintenance requirements.
    • Empowers Underground Mine Maintenance section to take risk-based safety decisions.
    • Enables and supports the safety leadership programme within Underground Mine Maintenance.
    • Leads the development and execution of safety improvement initiatives in support of the business plan.
    • Drives contractor safety management and engagement in Underground Mine Maintenance.
    • Verifies and enables the safe and healthy execution of all activities to design, schedule and Budget. 
    • Manages areas of responsibility in recognition of the Social Licence to Operate including ensuring compliance to all relevant national regulations and laws.
    • Manages change and risk through the application of appropriate assessment and quantification process to ensure that the business is not deliberately or inadvertently subjected to unnecessary risks.

             

 

  • Budgets, Cost & Governance
    • Defines high quality Budgets and forecasts that align to the business tactical and strategic objectives.
    • Delivers Budgets and forecasts as per the business planning cycle.
    • Inspires and influences team members to assume ownership of Budget goals and actions.
    • Manages business operational and capital costs to the Budget and forecast commitments.
    • Ensures maintenance plans and costs commitments are aligned with Budget and Life of Asset plans.
    • Maintains strict cost and performance disciple through effective mid-month and month-end financial processes. Routinely analyses expenditure, commitments and physicals to address variances.
    • Complies with reporting timelines and standards including month-end processes.
    • Effective in engaging and managing contractors by following due process in complying with contractor management, procurement and invoice procedures and processes.
    • Undertakes all business in adherence to the company Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery and Corruption and Fraud prevention policies, procedures and strategies.

  • Planning & Scheduling
    • Champions and enables maintenance planning and reliability engineering across the Underground Maintenance sections.
    • Drives correct focus with the planning functions to ensure: Short Term planning is delivering accuracy and precision of Planned and Preventative Maintenance tasks and activities; Shutdown planning is enabling Work Management and Project Management.
    • Ensures SAP enables improved maintenance planning and parts management. Maintains accuracy of master data and verifies through embedding QA/QC processes.
    • Collaborates with Supply to uplifts parts management processes through ensure all parts are identified, catalogued and stocked according to business risk criticality, lead time, usage and cost.
    • Ensures Supply are provided with a minimum rolling 3 month schedule of parts and consumables needs.
    • Collaborates with Underground Mining peers to drive operate for reliability across the business and ensures a risk cognizant, data driven approach to continuous improvement and performance optimization of the maintenance schedules through aligning maintenance plans with production plans / commitments.
    • Plans maintenance of classified plant in compliance with applicable statutory codes.
    • Ensures compliance with planned and predictive work maintenance schedule including PCRs and drives focus on Backlog management to reschedule and complete planned work displaced by unplanned breaks in activities.
    • Drives planned and scheduled weekly, shutdown and servicing work processes to facilitate the preventative maintenance strategy.
    • Ensures accurate job scopes, parts kitting and staging to enable planned maintenance activities.
    • Ensures that all identified improvement opportunities and projects are to aligned business priorities, scoped, resourced and executed appropriately.

 

 

  • Maintenance & Technical Excellence.
  • Leads the Underground Mine Maintenance section for success, identifying and ensuring that the required skills, systems, materials and infrastructure are defined, planned, available and sustained.
  • Establishes, communicates and monitors quality and performance standards, embedding a philosophy of continuous improvement and maintenance excellence.
  • Works with operations leadership to instill a culture of Operate for Reliability with supporting KPIs.
  • Champions the SAP deployment within Underground Mine Maintenance ensuring the deployment is supported by adequate training resources for effective skills transfer and development.
  • Enables the development of a safety and operational criticality focused Reliability Engineering and Condition Monitoring strategy for Underground Mine Maintenance through implementing condition monitoring data collection and supporting analytics to uplift critical asset reliability.
  • Maintains the fixed plant mechanical and electrical infrastructure to the required standard, eliminating these as a cause of repetitive production losses by implementing and overseeing a Defect Elimination program whereby high impact or recurring failures are identified, root causes determined, and corrective actions carried out and verified to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Ensures there are zero avoidable unplanned production delays attributable to poor maintenance practices.
  • Provides technical input and expertise on an as requested basis to new projects and corporate studies.
  • Ensures maintenance contractors deliver required service level to budget and schedule.
  • Undertakes quality control and assurance on both owner and contractor activities.  Identifies and executes corrective actions from variance to design and provides corrective actions.
  • Operates surface and underground workshops, fuel facilities and substations cognizant of the area specific fire and atmosphere risks ensuring appropriate controls are in place, complied with and maintained.
  • Establishes with Health and Safety a Diesel Particulate Matter monitoring and risk mitigation programme.
  • Drives Preventative Maintenance across the underground fleet through routine reviews of completed preventative maintenance activities to confirm resources, time allocations and tasks are appropriate.
  • Demonstrates excellence in critical hose, fuel and hot works management to mitigate underground fire and atmospheric hazards associated with the operating and maintaining of mobile fleet.
  • Establishes undercarriage, frame, boom and drifter preventative maintenance programmes supported by non-destructive testing and high-quality rebuilding, welding and fabrication.
  • Routinely inspects workshops, MCCs, electrical installations, headframes, pump stations, surface fans and completed activities to ensure fixed equipment is safely, effectively and efficiently maintained to deliver the required levels of service, reliability and safety.

 

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and experience

 

  • Proven experience in mobile, electrical and mechanical maintenance in support of underground mining operations engineering.
  • Electrical or Mechanical engineering degree and/or trades qualifications.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop teams.
  • Minimum 15 years of maintenance experience working in industry with at least 5 years in a mining engineering leadership role.

  • A robust understanding of best practice in safe Underground Mine Maintenance
  • French or Swahili language skills are advantageous
  • Previous overseas experience.
