Main Objectives of the Position
Under the direct supervision of the Manager – Health & Safety, the Health & Safety System Improvement Superintendent will lead a team responsible for strengthening safety performance across the operation through data-driven insights, system improvements, and proactive risk management.
The role focuses on creating foresight into changing risk levels, enabling preventive action before incidents occur, and supporting line management in implementing effective health and safety processes. The incumbent will drive the development of reporting tools, data tracking systems, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with organizational health and safety objectives.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Safety Management or a related field.
- Certification in Incident Investigation (ICAM, Essential Factors, Blueline) is an advantage.
- NEBOSH or equivalent certification and relevant statutory safety qualifications are desirable.
Required Experience
- Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in Health & Safety within mining or processing environments.
- At least three (3) years in a Safety Superintendent or equivalent leadership role on large-scale operations or projects.
Required Skills
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to translate technical safety concepts into practical, operational solutions.
- Solid knowledge of modern safety science and professional safety practices.
- Strong reporting, data analysis, and performance measurement skills.
- Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proven leadership, coaching, and team development capabilities.
- Strong project management and prioritization skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under pressure.
- Knowledge of ISO/SANS 45001 and ISO 31000 safety management systems.
- Fluent in English and French (written and spoken).
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of health and safety systems to ensure compliance and risk reduction.
- Drive safety improvement initiatives aligned with business objectives, leveraging data and modern technologies.
- Develop and maintain data tracking systems, dashboards, and reports to support informed decision-making.
- Monitor leading indicators, analyze trends, and provide actionable insights to management.
- Oversee incident investigation processes, ensuring quality root cause analysis and effective closure of actions.
- Manage action tracking systems to ensure timely implementation of audit findings, incident actions, and safety initiatives.
- Lead and develop a team of safety systems and improvement professionals, ensuring high performance and accountability.
- Provide coaching and training to line management and teams on safety systems, processes, and data usage.
- Support procurement processes by reviewing and evaluating health and safety aspects in tender documentation.
- Build strong stakeholder relationships to ensure effective collaboration across departments.
- Manage budgets and contracts in line with organizational requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership and proactive engagement.
- Ensure compliance with Glencore SAFEWORK standards and MUMI SARL environmental policies.
