Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

Reporting to the Environmental Supervisor, the incumbent's role will be to support the management of the environmental function within our mining operation at KCC. This will include implementing environmental management systems, ensuring compliance with company regulations and standards, and actively promoting sustainable environmental practices across all mining operations. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of our environmental performance by ensuring compliance with legal requirements and best practices. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Implement environmental systems and procedures : This includes the application of methodologies to improve environmental performance in various areas such as air quality, water management, waste treatment, biodiversity, and compliance with ISO 14001, in order to ensure an environmentally friendly operational framework;
  • Interpret and monitor environmental legislation : This includes staying informed of current and future environmental regulations, both nationally and internationally, and ensuring that all company activities are fully compliant, anticipating changes for proactive compliance;
  • Implement environmental monitoring programs : This involves designing and executing regular monitoring procedures for water, air, noise, vibration, biodiversity and waste, collecting essential data to assess the environmental impact of operations;
  • Carry out regular inspections and audits : This includes conducting periodic environmental compliance assessments (air, water, noise, biodiversity, waste) according to legal and internal company requirements, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement;
  • Support authorization and compliance processes regulatory : This includes assisting in the preparation and monitoring of permit application files, communicating required environmental data and establishing effective liaison with regulatory bodies to ensure that necessary permits are obtained and maintained;
  • Participate in environmental impact assessments : This involves actively contributing to environmental impact studies, baseline studies and risk assessments associated with existing mining operations and expansion projects, providing critical analyses for decision-making;
  • Support waste stream management: This includes assisting in overseeing waste management, both hazardous and non-hazardous, ensuring compliance with KCC's internal procedures and best practices to minimize environmental impact;
  • Maintain environmental data records : This includes the responsibility of maintaining accurate and up-to-date databases of environmental information, and contributing to the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual environmental reports for traceability and reliable analysis;
  • Organize environmental awareness training : This involves designing and facilitating training sessions and informal discussions for operational staff and contractors, to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote good practices;
  • Assist in environmental incident investigations : This includes active participation in environmental incident investigations, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective and preventive measures to prevent recurrence.

 

Qualifications and experience.

 

  • Hold a University Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Have at least 2 years of relevant environmental experience, preferably in the mining, industrial or infrastructure sectors.
  • Have a working knowledge of environmental regulations and international and/or national standards of the DRC (e.g. IFC performance standards, ISO 14001).
  • Have experience with environmental monitoring equipment and data analysis,
  • Having a good understanding of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and environmental data management tools would be an advantage.

  • Have in-depth knowledge of environmental standards and regulations in force.
  • Have a mastery of relevant IT tools for the collection and analysis of environmental data.
