Under the direct supervision of the Drill & Blast Sr Engineer ., The incumbent will play a key role in optimizing drilling and blasting operations within the copper and cobalt mine. Their mission will be to ensure the safety, efficiency, and compliance of these operations with production and site design requirements. They will be responsible for supporting blast designs, implementing quality control (QAQC), vibration monitoring, and wall control initiatives, while contributing to the continuous improvement of the blasting process. This role involves working closely with the mining engineering, operations, and geotechnical teams for optimal and safe extraction.

He/She will have, among other things, the following essential functions (non-exhaustive):

  • Promote and implement safety : This includes actively integrating and continuously promoting the company's safety management system into all drilling and blasting activities. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring that safety protocols are not only understood but also strictly enforced by all internal teams and contractors involved, in order to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Conduct pre-blast risk assessments : This includes carrying out all necessary and mandatory risk assessments before each blasting operation. The engineer will be required to identify potential hazards , assess associated risks and ensure that all required mitigation measures are in place, in strict compliance with company safety standards and current mining regulations.
  • Implement Quality Assurance and Control (QAQC) procedures: This includes defining, rigorously applying, and monitoring QAQC procedures for all stages of drilling and blasting execution. The objective is to ensure that operations are carried out according to technical specifications, validated designs, and mining industry best practices, thus ensuring efficiency and quality of work.
  • Analyze the performance of drilling and blasting operations : This includes systematically collecting field data, monitoring the effects of blasting (such as rock displacement), and thoroughly assessing ore fragmentation. The engineer will use this data to analyze blast performance, identify deviations from targets, and propose adjustments to improve the overall efficiency and profitability of operations.
  • Conduct vibration and airborne shock wave monitoring : This includes setting up, monitoring, and analyzing equipment to measure ground vibrations and airborne shock waves generated by blasting, particularly in sensitive areas or near infrastructure. This responsibility aims to ensure compliance with regulatory limits and prevent negative impacts on the environment and structures.
  • Maintaining accurate records of operations : This includes the rigorous management and up-to-date maintenance of all documentation relating to blast designs, QAQC reports, and blasting performance indicators. The objective is to ensure complete traceability of operations and to have a reliable and organized database for analysis, auditing, and continuous process improvement.
  • Prepare and present performance reports : This includes compiling, analyzing, and regularly presenting detailed reports on drilling and blasting performance to management and other stakeholders. These reports will provide key information on operational efficiency, costs, results against targets, and improvement opportunities for decision-making.
  • Collaborate with mining technical teams : This includes close and ongoing collaboration with the geotechnical, topographical, and mine planning teams. The engineer will ensure that blasting operations are fully integrated into the overall mine plans, taking into account wall stability, ore dilution, and overall mining objectives.
  • Coordinate with drilling and blasting contractors : This includes establishing and maintaining effective and constructive communication with subcontractors responsible for drilling and blasting. The engineer will ensure that their operations strictly adhere to the mine's blasting designs, technical specifications, and operational standards.
  • Oversee contractor performance : This includes actively monitoring and continuously evaluating contractor field operations against blast design specifications and company standards. The engineer will ensure quality workmanship, adherence to contractual commitments, and expected performance, while providing technical support and guidance as needed.
