Job Description
The Drill & Blast Coordinator plays a key coordination and operational support role in managing drilling and blasting activities within the open pit mining operation. The position ensures that drilling and blasting activities are properly planned, coordinated, monitored, and executed in line with approved mine plans, safety standards, and operational targets.
The role requires practical experience in drilling operations, blasting activities, and/or rock drilling tools (RDT) management, with the ability to coordinate multiple operational stakeholders including mine operations, planning, survey, maintenance, and explosives suppliers.
The Drill & Blast Coordinator supports operational teams by ensuring alignment between technical designs and field execution, monitoring performance, and contributing to continuous improvement in safety, productivity, and cost control.
He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):
- Safety & Operational Coordination
- Promote strict adherence to site safety standards and blasting regulations.
- Participate in daily safety briefings and operational meetings.
- Ensure safe preparation of drilling and blasting areas prior to operations.
- Support enforcement of safe explosives handling and operational discipline.
- Monitor field conditions and report safety concerns to the relevant supervisors.
- Drilling & Blasting Coordination

- Coordinate drilling activities to ensure compliance with approved drill patterns and designs.
- Ensure drilling activities follow the planned mining sequence and production schedule.
- Monitor drilling accuracy including:
- Hole depth
- Collar position
- Deviation control
- Coordinate with drilling supervisors and operators to ensure proper pattern preparation.
- Support supervision of charging, tie-in, and blast preparation activities.
- Verify that blast preparation activities comply with:
- Coordinate blast clearance procedures and operational readiness prior to firing.
- Support QA/QC verification activities before blasting operations.
- Rock Drilling Tools (RDT) & Consumables Coordination
- Monitor the utilization of rock drilling tools across the drill fleet.
- Track usage and performance of:
- Drill rods
- Drill bits
- Hammers
- Coordinate with maintenance and supply teams to ensure availability of critical consumables.
- Monitor stock levels and ensure timely replenishment of drilling consumables.
- Support initiatives to:
- Increase RDT Lifespan
- Reduce cost per meter drilled
- Minimize operational dowtine due to consumable shortages
- Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

- Metres drilled
- Equipment utilisation and avalability
- Penetration rate
- Drill hole compliance
- Drill-to-depth compliance
- Explosives consumption vs plan
- Stemming compliance
- Identify performance gaps and support implementation of corrective actions.
- Contribute to cost optimization initiatives in drilling and blasting operations.
- Support the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.

Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering, Mining Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Drilling opeations
- Blasting operations
- Rock drilling tools (RDT) management in open pit mining
- Experience working in open pit mining operations.
- Practical knowledge of drill and blast operational processes.
- Experience coordinating operational teams and supporting field activities.
Competencies
