Job Description

 

The Authorized Task to Work Officer (ATW Officer) is responsible for controlling, authorizing, and monitoring all non-routine, high-risk, and critical tasks to ensure they are carried out safely, in compliance with company procedures, legal requirements, and mine safety standards.

The role is central to the Permit to Work (PTW / ATW) system, ensuring that hazards are identified, risks are controlled, and work is executed without incident. ATW Officer will ensure as well  that all underground mining activities (development, production drilling, ground support, backfilling, blasting, and related works) comply with approved mine designs, technical standards, safety requirements, and QAQC specifications.


He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive list):

 

  • Work Authorization; Permit Control & Hazard Control
      • Ensure all high-risk work is properly authorized before commencement.
      • Verify that required permits (hot work, confined space, electrical isolation, working at heights, blasting, etc.) are issued and valid.
      • Confirm scope of work matches approved permit conditions.
      • Ensure Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is completed.
      • Verify hazards are identified (ground conditions, ventilation, gas, water inflow, mobile equipment).
      • Confirm adequate control measures are implemented before work starts.
      • Ensure energy isolation procedures are applied correctly.
      • Verify electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical isolations.
      • Confirm zero-energy state before maintenance activities.

             

  • Responsible and accountable of all permits issuing

 

      • Manages the area Hazard Board together with the area supervisor to reflect worksite risks.
      • Link the ATW to the relevant permit(s).
      • Arrange for the identification of equipment to be worked on with the Authoriser for ATW.
      • Provide support to the area during an evacuation.
      • Manage the issue and return of extra personal locks
      • Manage the issue and return of isolation locks
      • Communicate with operations once an ATW is closed, i.e. ready for unlocking.
      • Ensure compliance to the requirements of the ATW procedure SSH-PRO-100.2
      • Verifies that all personnel have been trained, accredited and appointed to work on different roles of the high risk activities.

 

  • Manage the authorization in the work area for safe production

 

      • Issues the Authorisation to work after verifying with the area supervisor
      • Administer all documentation associated with the ATW process, including document storage requirements.
      • Ensure the work group(s) and Authoriser for ATW has the scope of work clearly defined.
      • Inspect all locks, lock boxes and other isolation equipment to be in good order.
      • Review changes to scope of work and assess impact on ATW status.
      • Communicate with operations once an ATW is closed, i.e. ready for unlocking.
      • Where there is an associated lockbox isolation, confirm that the scope of work can take place within the original intent and boundary of the isolation.
      • Hand over ATW office and ATW Officer key to oncoming ATW Officer verbally.
      • Monitor compliance to stope note ,and stope fill note.

 

  • Reporting, Meetings, Admin
      • Prepare compliance operation  report
      • Authorization to work report
      • Deviation report

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and experience

 

    • Diploma or Degree in: Mining Engineering, Engineering; Occupational Health & Safety or related field
    • Minimum 3–5 years experience in mining, industrial operations, or maintenance, 
    • Experience working in an underground mine is beneficial
    • Strong knowledge of: Permit to Work systems; Risk assessment methods; Mine safety legislation
